Bio: |
The Nitro High School "ShowCats" is directed by Amy
Sue Smith. Comprised of 40 singer/dancers, 14 musicians and 7 stage
crew, the "ShowCats" are a competitive show choir that practices five
days a week and up to four evenings per week. They compete in and out of
their home state of West Virginia and consistently place as one of the
top ten show choirs in the state. They recently competed in their first
competition of the year in Beavercreek, Ohio and won Class B Grand
Champion and second runner-up overall. They also won best show concept.
There is no funding through the school system or through the state of
West Virginia for any show choir. The ShowCats compete with schools from
other states that are funded through the state/county/city and have very
large budgets. They depend on fundraising and contributions from the
surrounding businesses to sustain this program. All costumes,
choreography fees, music fees, backdrop, stage props, voice instruction,
transportation costs and hotel costs come from sponsorship funds,
out-of-pocket from parents or through fundraising. Fundraising began in
the summer. In addition to these expenses, the ShowCats do not have a
useable school auditorium in which to practice. Therefore, they must
rent an auditorium out of town to prepare for competitions.
Through talent, hard work (from the students, parents, directors and the
choreographer) and determination, the ShowCats have overcome all
financial obstacles to become an award winning show choir. The ShowCats'
choreographer is
David Legg, who has dedicated a lot of time and talent
to this group because he recognizes their talent and determination. |

Nomination
Statement: |
"I am nominating the ShowCats to be your
spotlight choir because they represent the talent and determination of
small town, U.S.A. and have overcome numerous financial obstacles to
become winners. The ShowCats know what it's like to work hard throughout
the summer to raise money to compete with the bigger/funded schools.
They have worked as a team, played as a team and are now winning as a
team." |
